Madagascar is globally known as the source of the finest vanilla. But the story of Bourbon vanilla begins on another island, far away: Réunion, a small French island in the Indian Ocean. It was there, in the early 19th century, that vanilla was introduced from Mexico. However, due to the lack of natural pollinators on the island, it seemed impossible to cultivate the exotic orchid successfully.
